Hal is a werewolf who was born to a normal family of wolves, and who was found abandoned as a pup by his adoptive human mother, Jane. She taught him to read and write, influencing him to become a protector of the wilderness. His nickname, “the Mauling Man,” is technically a misnomer, since Hal is not a man who becomes an animal, but an animal who becomes a man.
